What causes a canine "after-dinner" burp?

BURP!

Yes…you read that correctly. My dog burps after eating each of her twice-daily meals. She's a seven-year-old female miniature Schnauzer fed a healthy, home-cooked diet that contains none of the many foods to which she is allergic. It’s also low-fat to prevent a recurrence of pancreatitis, to which this breed is prone. She loves the taste of her food and is thriving on it. In addition, I mix a powdered probiotic with her food to aid her digestion and give her a daily vitamin-and-mineral supplement for dogs to ensure she gets all the nutrients she needs.

I don't feed her commercial dog food

Her food is home-prepared and moist, unlike dry commercial kibble.

The cause of my dog's after-dinner burp...I think

Moist dog food, unlike dry kibble, gets stuck in her whiskers. A flowing beard and awning-like eyebrows are the physical features that make the Schnauzer breed instantly recognizable. Unfortunately, since I began feeding her moist cooked food, it’s necessary to keep her beard trimmed. She now sports more of a moustache-and-goatee combo, not such a “girly” look, but more practical. With this modified beard, her face tends to look more like a terrier’s than a Schnauzer’s, except for the distinctive eyebrows.

It’s now much easier to keep her facial hair clean and un-matted. I wash her mouth and shortened whiskers thoroughly with baby wipes immediately after every meal, ensuring that I remove all small bits and traces of soft food.

The funny thing is, when I begin this whisker-cleaning process, she invariably opens her mouth and burps loudly. BURP! Sometimes she does it once, other times twice—in quick succession. It sounds exactly like a human baby’s burp.

I’m guessing here, but I think the cause of my dog’s burps is the same as the baby’s. She eats very fast like a hungry baby gulps down milk or formula, and, because the food is cooked and there are no large hard pieces, she doesn’t chew a lot. She even licks the bottom and sides of her food bowl to get every last bit. Gulping down her meal causes her to swallow air. Air in her tummy causes the burp. Right?

I considered purchasing one of those “obstacle” feeding bowls for pets that eat too fast, but decided it wouldn’t work because she uses her tongue to push the soft food into her mouth. Believe me…she could quickly work around any obstacle! Anyway, as long as she burps after she eats and gets rid of the swallowed air—no harm done. ..I hope.

Crunchy treats give her something to chew

Does your dog burp?

By the way, in case you’re worried my dog doesn’t get the opportunity to chew, she does. I searched online to find premium crunchy treats that do not contain allergens and are low in fat. I make her “work” for them and give them as rewards when she obeys an instruction or is very well-behaved. She also has chew toys that she uses to give her teeth regular workouts, particularly a Nylabone dinosaur that she loves. I brush her teeth daily to prevent the formation of plaque and freshen her breath. (Cooked ground grass-fed bison is the best protein for her, but it wouldn't leave her breath sweet-smelling without routine dental care!)

I can’t help but laugh every time my dog burps. It sounds so funny! I wonder: do other dogs burp after eating?

Sounds like a human baby burping!

Human babies are purposely "burped" to get rid of swallowed air and avoid tummyaches.

This is great! I have a pug who burbs after eating as well! For much the same reason - swallowing air while she eats. After dinner every night she likes to come sit on me so that I can pat her chest until she lets out a nice belch! I think its hilarious, and I like to hear that others experience a similar thing! Thanks for posting!

Thanks for stopping by and reading about my "burping" dog and for your comment, Monique. Your pug goes one step further than my mini Schnauzer. She actually lets you "burp" her like a baby. That is hilarious!

Maybe there are a lot of dogs burping after meals. I know that some individual dogs and, indeed, some breeds tend to gulp their food. That makes for a lot of swallowed air, doesn't it?

My dobermann belches good and loud and actually looks like he enjoys it.

Only problem is he will eat his dinner come through to the lounge to see what were having for dinner and whilst doing so will burp straight on to our food - this inevitably gets the missus mad but being a bloke I find it hilarious

Hi, doberdog...I'll bet a large dog such as a doberman packs a real wallop of a burp!

I think most dogs do like to check out the humans' dinner table to see what they're missing (and hope something falls to the floor), even if they've just filled up with their own dinner. I've noticed some dogs--similar to some humans--don't really need to be hungry to want more food.

However, saving the belch until lined up with the humans' table may not be conducive to "good human/dog relations", as evidenced by your wife's reaction!

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Funny hub, Jaye. I never owned a burping dog but I would like to join this club. Would a farting Doberman qualify? Just wonderin;.

doberdog 4 months ago

Drjb - he does a lot of that as well and doesn't care if his rear

is in your face at the time - dirty little sod!

The first time he belched both my mother and missus blamed me and actually both accused me of lying when I said it was the dog. After quite a heated argument he came wandering through and did it again - both were made to apologise!

Very funny, Jaye! Your little dog is certainly treated as well as any baby! Your story is so cute, as is your miniature Schnauzer. Although I don't presently have a dog, your tips about brushing your dogs teeth and giving her the opportunity to chew will be important to other dog owners.

Hi, drbj...My dog isn't guilty of smelly farting, but I sometimes wonder if she's letting a bit of "air" escape from the rear when I notice her suddenly (and I mean swiftly) turning her head to sniff her own rear end! After all, dogs smell much better than humans do. Thank goodness she doesn't let loose with the noxious fumes some dogs can muster! To answer your question, I think a farting Doberman would probably qualify. It's just another means of getting rid of that air bubble....

doberdog: Your poor Doberman catches it (or rather, lets it go) from each end, doesn't he? And you catch the flak for it until he's shown to be the guilty party. Very funny!

Stephanie...How nice to see you visiting my hub. Yes, I treat Puppy Girl (her Hubpages pseudonym and an early term of endearment that I still call her occasionally) too much like a toddler, but she acts like one. Miniature Schnauzers seem to keep youthful behavior into adulthood and perhaps into old age. I've read about others who continue to act like toddlers or at least teenagers. My furgirl is spoiled, and don't I know it, but I love her so much I haven't the heart to tell her she's not a real person! The tooth brushing and chewing are important for all dogs, but especially so when the dog eats moist food.

Thanks to you all for visiting my hub and commenting.

Since she just turned seven (birthday: January 3), it's obviously not a puppy thing, but the result of her eating so fast. Thanks for reading.

Haha ha!!! Oh Jayne I love this hub as it certainly brought back many great memories.

I had a Min Schnauzer called Pepper who lived till she was nearly 17 years old; and yes she was a burper too.

Another comment of yours also brought back memories of my Doberman Major who used to sit by me on the sette but with his two rear feet on the floor and then he would very quietly fart before looking at his rear end in amazenmnet.

Thank you again Jayne for sharing this gem; take care and enjoy your day.

Eddy.

Hi, Eiddwen...Aren't mini Schnauzers wonderful? (Could be I'm a bit biased, of course.) It's great your Pepper lived to the grand age of 17. I hope my girl will live long too, and be healthy.

This is a bit morbid, I know, but one of my biggest worries is what will happen to her if she outlasts me (I'm 68). I know my son would care for her, and she loves him dearly, but he doesn't pamper her as much as I do. On the other hand, losing her in my old age would be as painful as losing a human family member because I love her so dearly. (No one but a true dog lover will understand that statement. Everyone else will call me crazy!)

Your comment about your Doberman made me laugh out loud because my girl's behavior when gas escapes from that route is so hilarious. She glares at her rear end as though it betrayed her. That's the only way I know what occurred because her farts aren't noisy or smelly (humans could wish to be so dainty), and it always makes me laugh.

In fact, with all the love and laughter she's brought into my life, Puppy Girl's made me regret it took me so long to understand the wonder of dogs. Still, I'm thankful for the joy she's given me for the past seven years.

As you know if you've read my other hubs about my sweet Puppy Girl, she is my very first pet. I didn't get her until I was 61, so was a total novice in pet-parenting (which made for many mistakes, but I also had some "blind good luck" in several instances). Since I worked long hours with periodic travel during my career, I would not have made a good pet parent all those years. She came along at just the right time, when I had to retire a few years early due to health issues. Everyone who knew me was amazed when I announced, "I want a dog" and even more amazed when I followed through and got her.

Thanks for reading and commenting about my "burping Schnauzer", Eiddwen.

This is so cute. I love dogs and I enjoyed reading this hub very much. I never imagined dogs could burp like that. Great hub!

JayeWisdom Hub Author 3 months ago

Thanks, Bobbi...Since I'm washing her Schnauzer whiskers with a baby wipe right after she finishes eating, I'm always around to hear that "BURP!" I chuckle every time she does it because it sounds so funny. The sound truly reminds me of a baby's burp after feeding.

Thanks for stopping by this hub. JAYE

P.S. I re-read my reply above to a comment by Dr. BJ and laughed all over again. When I stated that "...dogs smell much better than humans do...", I was referring to their ability to smell odors of which humans aren't even aware--NOT their (or our) personal "fragrances." Somedays my words get tangled before they hit the screen!

Oh Jaye, this is too cute! I've never heard of a burping dog before. Your theory that she eats too fast is probably spot on. Who can blame her for scoffing it down - you're feeding her such yummy stuff :)

Voted up / funny / awesome.

Thanks, Cloverleaf. Isn't it funny? I still laugh at her every day, even though I know to expect her "burp!"

Both my Rotts burp after gulping down their kibble and weighing 92 pounds each, their burps are getting closer and closer to human burps! I will not talk about what comes out the other end at times... Anyhow, voted up and funny and interesting, thanks for sharing.

My dog burps faithfully after each meal. Someone told me recently it is because they have to bend down so low to reach their bowl. It was suggested to me to put her food on a stool and try that. Don't know if there is any truth to it.

JayeWisdom profile image

JayeWisdom Hub Author 4 weeks ago

Thanks for the suggestion, lambservant. As you can see from the photo, my dog's bowl is slightly elevated, but --as she's still burping after every meal--perhaps I need to purchase a higher stand for her food and water bowls.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Raising food bowls has been proven to be a factor in CAUSING bloat==especially on deep chested large dogs--Dobies, Great Danes and Labs so I would keep food on the floor which is more normal for a dog. On of my dog burps after dinner, too and I get concerned because I am worried that one day he may swallow air and not be able to release it. I use slow feed bowl AND kong to slow eating down.

JayeWisdom profile image

JayeWisdom Hub Author 13 days ago

Thanks for the suggestions, Rory. I didn't realize that having the dog's food bowl off the floor might cause problems. I've also seen the slow feed bowl, but don't think it will work except with kibble. I feed my dog "wet" home-cooked food instead.

Glad you read the article and commented. I'm going to lower my dog's food and water bowls and see if that helps with the "air" problem. Good luck with your dogs!
